A good original large possibly First World War period 'Aeronautical Inspection Directorate substantially made lapel badge'; red enamel gilt title circlet surmounted by a Crowned wing 'On H.M. Service' with 'A.I.D' to centre on black enamel ground, the reverse impressed with official issue number '2152'. Good condition, complete with buttonhole lapel fitting, no damage to the enamel, minor surface scratches. Height 32mm.
The Aeronautical Inspection Department was formed in 1913 for the purpose of inspecting aircraft and other supplies for the Royal Flying Corps.
