A scarce original First World War 1914 Kitcheners Army, 'University and Public Schools Battalions pin badge' in the form of a crossed 'Union Flag' and diagonally marked red over blue 'Regimental Colour' resting on flaming grenade with blue enamel scroll inscribed 'U.P.S'; the reverse impressed with Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1914 and maker's details 'JF' (James Fenton & Co. Birmingham). Very good condition, complete with original pin fitting, no stress marks or damage to the enamel.
Height approx 22mm.
The 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st University & Public Schools Service Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers formed part of Kitchener’s Army and were raised on 11th September 1914 at Epsom as 98th Brigade.
The 18th, 19th and 21st disbanded 24th April 1916 in France. The 20th on 10th February 1918.
