A scarce original circa 1941 to 1946 period 'Irish maternity nurses large bronzed badge'; Crowned Celtic cross, the top arm with 'Maid of Erin harp', the lower with '1745' the sides with 'B' and 'M' after the founder; the title circlet inscribed 'Rotunda Hospital' 'Solamen Miseris' (Solace of the Helpless), the centre embossed with classical figure of woman and babes; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'J.S&S.D' (John Smyth & Sons Wicklow Street, Dublin. a mark used between 1941 and 1946) and in relief 'TO DO MY DUTY' with official issue number '1202'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings.

The Rotunda Hospital is a maternity hospital and a training centre situated in Parnell Street, Dublin, Ireland, founded as the Dublin Lying-In Hospital in 1745 by the surgeon Bartholomew Mosse. It was granted by Royal Charter on 2 December 1756 by King George II.
