A rare original post 1940 Second World War period English made 'Free French Air Force pilot's wing badge'; full size gilded brass example bearing the 'Cross of Lorraine' within a red, white and blue shield mounted with star and bearing a V shaped title below "F.A.F.L." (Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres); the reverse impressed with official issue number "3413". Good condition, retaining the correct style original pin fittings, service wear to the enamel with stress marks and chips, gilt remains bright, complete with original black felt cloth backing.

The Free French Air Forces (Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres, FAFL) were the air arm of the Free French Forces during the Second World War from 1940. They officially ceased to hold this title from 1943, with the merger of Free French Forces with General Giraud's anti-German forces, but were still commonly known by the title until the liberation of France in 1944, when they became the regular French Air Army.
