Queen Victoria Rowntree Chocolate Gift Tin, For Troops Serving in South Africa 1900.

A scarce original Boer War gift tin sent to troops serving for Queen and Country. Gilded red and blue painted tin, bearing embossed portrait medallion of the Queen; to her left the "Royal Monogram" and to her right "South Africa 1900" below a handwritten facsimile message 'I wish you a happy New Year'. Upon opening a full array of chocolate bars alternatively stamped "ROWNTREE" and "YORK within waxed paper lining. Good alround condition, hinges in working order, no major dents, no splits to the corners, paintwork bearing service wear, three choc bars with cracks, minor flakes. Not suitable for consumption !
Size 159 x 86mm.

The Queen commissioned the country's three principal chocolate manufacturers, J S Fry & Sons, Cadbury Brothers Limited and Rowntree and Company Limited, to undertake the order for what amounted, by the end of 1900, to 123,000 tins. As Quakers, all three manufacturers refused to accept payment for the order and, not wishing to profit from the War, they offered to donate the chocolate instead.

Boer War 'South African Coat of Arms' Union Flag Patriotic Rifle Brooch by Max Minck & Co, Durban .

A scarce original circa pre-1902 'Boer War patriotic brooch'; a large imposing unmarked silver gilt example, depicting Queen Victoria Crowned crossed rifle and 'Union Flag'; to the left the 'Coat of Arms of the Transvaal' and to the right those of the 'Orange Free State' all in fine quality vivid enamelling; the reverse impressed with maker's details "Max Minck & Co Durban" and "Patent" mark. Very good condition, complete with old period replacement padded pin fittings, enamel almost perfect except for defect to rifle butt.

5th VB South Wales Borderers Boer War Tribute Silver Regimental Spoon.

A very attractive scarce silver spoon, the finial a khaki uniformed Boer War soldier about to fix bayonet, the ground on which he stands with plinth below inscribed “5 VB” the shank a column of crossed rifle and flag; the reverse of the bowl bearing Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1904, maker's details "C.B&S" (Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd) and "Rd354104" a registered, design and patent date of 1900. Very good condition.
Length 124mm.

5th VB South Wales Borderers were formed in 1897 with HQ Newton, Montgomeryshire. Many of its members served in the Boer War resulting in the Battalion being accorded the battle honour “South Africa 1900-01” in 1905. When the Volunteer system ended in 1908, the Battalion was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers as its 7th Battalion.
