A scarce original Great War period '1914 -1919 War Services Rendered badge'; finely made circular pendant with title surround inscribed "ESSEX 120 August 1914 March 1919" the voided centre bearing Red Cross over laurel spray with initials "VAD" within, the reverse impressed "9ct" (9 carat gold). St John Hospital Oatlands was a Auxiliary Military Hospital opened in 1914 by Lady Meux, wife of Admiral Sir Hedworth Meux, Naval Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth. It was situated in a large private residence named Oatlands, Kingston Crescent Portsmouth, Hampshire and was lent to the local St John Ambulance Association during the First World War and was equipped with thirty beds.
