'Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co Ltd' (Oil Tankers) circa 1930's Officer's Gold Bullion Cap Badge.

A rare original circa 1930's period 'Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company Limited, London shipping oil tanker cap badge' displaying the later pattern company 'Shell' emblem within a gold bullion wreath, the reverse with herringbone pattern black cotton lining and remains attached to its original oak leaf embroidered silk cap band. Very good clean condition, two thin patches to the cap band.
Height approx 52mm.

The 'Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co Ltd' saltire with red disc to centre company flag was still being displayed in the 1929 edition of 'Brown's Flags and Funnels'. Sometime between then and 1938 the flag change to shell pattern centre as illustrated (241) in 'Ships and the Sea' Talbot Booth.

A rare original circa 1920's 'Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company Limited, London shipping oil tanker cap badge'; the Company's gilded brass flag inlaid with white enamel and bearing a blue saltire with red disc to centre, this mounted upon a gold bullion wreath, the reverse with waxed black hessian lining and remains attached to its original oak leaf embroidered silk cap band. Very good clean condition, enamel perfect except for a very minor nick to white enamel left edge, thin patch to the cap band.
Height approx 55mm.

A rare original pre-1952 possibly Surgeons 'Mercantile Fleet Auxiliary officer's padded cap badge'; gilded metal fouled anchor within red silk padded circlet with gold wire "M.F.A" resting in gold bullion embroidered laurel sprays, surmounted by a padded velvet King's Crown, the reverse with black herringbone pattern cotton lining. Good condition, bullion toned, minor verdigris to anchor.

'MV Winchester Castle' Union-Castle Shipping Line Silver Souvenir Badge.

A scarce original circa 1930's period 'M.V. Winchester Castle souvenir badge', rope edged silver rectangular example depicting a picture image transfer of the ship over butterfly wing background; the reverse impressed "Made in England Sterling Silver PT 220213". Good condition, complete with original pin fittings, colours remain bright, minimal fading to edge, surface scratches to perspex with shrinkage to right side.

'MV Winchester Castle' was a ocean liner of the 'Union-Castle Mail S.S. Co.' built by Harland & Wolff, maiden voyage 24 October 1930, scrapped 1960.

'MV Warwick Castle' Union-Castle Shipping Line Wishbone Badge, 1942 Torpedoed & Sunk by German Submarine U-413.

A scarce original circa 1930's period 'M.V. Warwick Castle souvenir badge', gilded brass example in the form of a wishbone, mounted with a brass and enamel circular disc displaying the 'Union-Castle Line' company flag within a blue enamel title strap. Very good condition, enamel perfect, minimal service wear.
Length 33mm.

'MV Warwick Castle' was a ocean liner of the 'Union-Castle Mail S.S. Co.' built in 1930 by Harland & Wolff. On November 14th 1942 whilst being used as a troopship, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-413 off Portugal with the loss of the Captain and 62 men.

A good original circa 2008 'Queen Elizabeth 2 Cunard Shipping Line Farewell Season 2008 gilt badge' commemorating her final voyage from Southampton to Dubai which began on 11 November 2008 and her arrival on 26 November in a flotilla of 60 smaller vessels, led by MY Dubai, the personal yacht of Sheikh Mohammed, ruler of Dubai, in time for her official handover the following day.
Very good condition, complete with single pin fitting and retainer.

The Missions To Seamen Gold Bullion Felt Cloth Enamel Cap Badge.

A scarce original circa 1940's 'The Missions To Seamen cap badge'; black felt padded example bearing gold wire bullion laurel wreath, pinned to the centre a silver plated flag inlaid with blue enamel, displaying the "Flying Angel Symbol'; the reverse with black cotton herringbone lining and traces of old label. Good condition, bullion a little dull with spots of verdigris, the badge retaining original pin fittings, enamel intact, but with heavy verdigri to pin (making it fragile) and a touch to the front.

'The Missions to Seamen' is a Christian welfare charity serving merchant crews around the world. It name was changed to 'The Mission to Seafarers' in the year 2000.

R.M.S.Lusitania Cunard Shipping Line, Commemorative Medal in Case of Issue & Certificate.

The "Lusitania" was sunk by a German submarine on May 7th 1915. She had on board at the time 1,951 passengers and crew, of whom 1,198 perished. This is "An exact replica of the medal which was designed in Germany and distributed to commemorate the sinking of the "Lusitania". It was struck in England during the Great War and issued by the 'Lusitania Souvenir Medal Committee' 32, Duke Street, Manchester Square W.1. with all profits going to the 'St. Dunstan's Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostel'.

Very good condition, complete with box of issue, this with scuffs and general age wear and lid detached, folded certificate toned, stained and with foxing.

A scarce original fine quality 'S.S.Montrose ship's wheel brooch', mounted to the centre a highly enamelled maple leaf representing the Canadian voyages this Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd' shipping line company ship undertook; the reverse bearing Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1936 and maker's details "R.Bros" (Randle Brothers). Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel.

'S.S.Montrose' was built by Fairfield Co, Glasgow for Canadian Pacific SS Co, she started her maiden voyage on 5th May 1922 from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal. In the Second World War she was then converted to the Armed Merchant Cruiser and became 'HMS Forfar'. On the 2nd December 1940 she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U.99 off the West coast of Ireland with the loss of 172 lives.

The 'S.S.Empress of Australia' of the Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd' started life as the 'Admiral Von Tirpitz' for the Hamburg America Line, she was launched in 1913 and renamed 'TirpitzI' in 1914. Work on her ceased with the outbreak of war and in 1920 she was then completed and sold to Canadian Pacific in 1921 and renamed 'Empress of China' and again In 1922 'S.S.Empress of Australia'. Her last Quebec to Southampton crossing started on 2nd Sep.1939 and she was then engaged as a troopship until 1952 after which she was sold for scrap.

The 'S.S.Duchess of Bedford' was built for the 'Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd' in 1928 by 'John Brown & Co Ltd, Glasgow'. Laid down as the 'Duchess of Cornwall' but was launched as the 'Duchess of York' in 1928. She was requisitioned in 1940 and used to transport troops, German prisoners of war and evacuee children. In 1943 she was was hit by bombs while off the Spanish coast and caught fire and was abandoned with the loss of 27 lives and subsequently torpedoed and sunk by 'HMS Douglas' so as not to attract enemy submarines to the area.
